RCD’s and Smoke Alarms
Since 2009, RCD’s and Smoke Alarms are required by law and will need to be installed if you sell or rent out a property.
What is a RCD? An RCD is a safety device that monitors electrical current flowing within a circuit from the meter box or distribution board. It works on the principle that the electricity current flowing in must be equal to the current flowing out of the circuit. When this flow has an imbalance the RCD immediately cuts the electricity supply to prevent electrocution.
Why do I have to install a Smoke Alarm?
From 1 October 2009 mains powered smoke alarms must be fitted in all existing residential buildings prior to sale and when a new tenancy agreement is signed for rental properties.
Only working smoke alarms can provide the critical early warning needed to save lives and minimise property damage. When you are asleep you lose your sense of smell. A smoke alarm is your electronic nose and will alert you if there is smoke from a fire.
